As we look forward to a new year, finding the right career for you may be at the forefront of your priorities. Last year’s challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic have transformed the job search and hiring process. Many positions have now become remote, and job duties may have shifted slightly. So how can you continue the job hunt without feeling frustrated or giving up?
Inspiration and positivity. Find your inspiration and motivation to start and follow through the search for your new career. Though the job search can sometimes be rough, it is important to remain positive that the right career is out there for you. Having some inspirational or positive quotes to refer back to can help increase your motivation during the process. Another way to stay on top of the game is to follow up after each job submission and interview, to show you are highly interested in the position.
Review your skills. Creating a list of your current and desired skills is a great way to figure out how qualified you are. If some skills on your desired list are very important to the industry, you may want to pursue gaining them by taking an online class, go through a mentorship program, or reach out to someone in your network that works in that industry. There are many resources online that can help you brush up on your current skills, or dive into new ones.
Research your career. Learning more about the industry and job duties of careers that interest you can help you decide which one will fit best with your skills. Some ways to increase your knowledge about the industry or specific career include: searching online, connecting with a friend in that industry, or attending a webinar. To remain consistent and confident, research two new careers each week and then rate your interest in each. If you have a high interest in one, measure the career against your preferred skills list. Compiling a list of questions to research is another way to help you get started. Some questions could include:
- What are my interests?
- Will there be a strong demand for that career in the future?
- What skills, education, languages, and experience are required in that field?
- What does the career growth look like?
- How much money do I want to make?
By incorporating these three components, your career hunt will feel easier and worth it. Find inspiration to be yourself, and remain positive in the new year while finding your desired career.
